A step by step guide to assignment writing

Join our four-part workshop series that focuses on preparation, research, referencing and writing assignments.

When you’re undertaking university study there are often a lot of assignments and writing to do, which can be daunting at first. The most important thing to remember is to start early and reach out for support.

Our four-part workshop series focuses on preparation, research, referencing and writing assignments.

Workshop 1: Plan and Prepare

  • Determine the purpose of your assignment by analysing the keywords in the assignment question and checking the criteria in the unit guide.
  • Brainstorm your initial ideas. Make a detailed plan that you can add to, as you continue researching.

Workshop 2: Research

  • Be aware that this can often be the most time-consuming stage of assignment writing.
  • Find appropriate sources for your assignments and use Library Resource Guides, search engines and databases.
  • Keep a record of quotes, paraphrases and your own ideas.
  • Further, refine your plan as you continue to research.

Workshop 3: Reference

  • Get to know your required referencing style and be aware of how to avoid plagiarism.
  • Understand why we cite sources and how exactly to do this
  • Use typical ways of including sources, summarise, paraphrase, quote.

Workshop 4: Write

  • Get your ideas into some sort of coherent order. Plan clear paragraphs that include topic sentences and supporting evidence.
  • Simplify and clarify the writing of essays and reports with a focus on writing clear, well-structured paragraphs in an academic style.#wearehereforyou #ourlocallearningcommunity
